Stability Ball Cable Fly

The Stability Ball Cable Fly is a chest-isolation exercise performed while lying with the upper back supported on a stability ball and pulling cable handles together in an arc. It primarily trains the chest while the shoulders and core help control the movement and keep the torso stable. It supports chest hypertrophy, pressing strength, and trunk-control development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set two cable pulleys to a low position and attach single handles. Choose a light load that you can control without shifting on the ball.
  2. Sit in front of the stability ball with one handle in each hand, then carefully walk the feet forward until your upper back and shoulders rest on the ball. Keep feet flat, knees bent, and hips lifted so the torso is level.
  3. Hold the handles above the chest with palms facing each other and a soft bend in the elbows. Brace the abdomen and keep the ribs from flaring.
  4. Slowly open the arms in a wide arc until the chest feels comfortably stretched, keeping the elbow angle nearly unchanged and the shoulders controlled.
  5. Exhale as you bring the handles together above the chest in the same arc. Squeeze the chest briefly, then return slowly and repeat without letting the hips drop.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize stability: Keep the feet wide enough to create a solid base and reduce the load if the ball or hips shift.
  2. Keep a soft elbow bend: Do not turn the movement into a cable press by repeatedly bending and straightening the elbows.
  3. Use a controlled range: Stop the lowering phase before the shoulders roll forward or the stretch becomes uncomfortable.
