Dumbbell French Press Stability Ball

The Stability Ball Dumbbell French Press is a seated overhead triceps extension performed while sitting on a stability ball. It primarily trains the triceps, especially during elbow extension, while the trunk and hips work to maintain a steady posture. It supports triceps strength and overhead pressing control.

Instructions

  1. Set up safely: Sit near the center of a properly inflated stability ball with both feet flat and about hip-width apart. Hold one dumbbell vertically with both hands, cupping the inside end of the dumbbell.
  2. Find a stable start position: Brace your abdomen, keep your chest tall, and press the dumbbell overhead with arms nearly straight. Keep your wrists neutral and your shoulders down away from your ears.
  3. Lower with control: Inhale and bend only at the elbows to lower the dumbbell behind your head. Keep your upper arms close to your head and avoid letting the elbows flare widely.
  4. Extend the elbows: Exhale as you straighten your elbows to return the dumbbell overhead. Squeeze the triceps without forcefully locking the elbows.
  5. Repeat steadily: Keep the ball still, feet planted, and spine neutral throughout each repetition. Use a lighter dumbbell or stop the set if balance or shoulder position deteriorates.

Technique tips

  1. Choose balance before load: Start with a light dumbbell and a non-slip surface; the ball should remain still during the set.
  2. Keep the elbows controlled: Point them generally forward and keep the upper arms close to the head rather than letting them drift outward.
  3. Protect your back: Keep the ribs from flaring and avoid arching the lower back as the dumbbell moves behind the head.
