Stability Ball Tricep Extension

The stability ball dumbbell triceps extension is a lying triceps isolation exercise performed with the upper back supported on a stability ball. Bending and straightening the elbows trains the triceps while the core and glutes stabilize the body on the ball. It supports arm-strength and muscle-building goals while also challenging balance and body control.

Instructions

  1. Set up safely: Hold one dumbbell with both hands and sit in front of a stability ball. Walk your feet forward until the upper back and shoulders are supported on the ball, with feet flat and knees bent.
  2. Find a stable bridge: Lift the hips until the torso is roughly parallel to the floor. Brace the abdomen, squeeze the glutes, and hold the dumbbell vertically above the chest with the arms straight.
  3. Lower with control: Keep the upper arms mostly still and point the elbows toward the ceiling as you bend them, lowering the dumbbell toward the forehead or just behind the head.
  4. Extend the elbows: Straighten the elbows to return the dumbbell to the starting position, contracting the triceps without forcefully locking the elbows. Keep the ball and hips steady throughout each repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load: Use a dumbbell you can lower and lift without the ball rolling or the elbows drifting wide.
  2. Prioritize stability: Keep feet planted, hips lifted, and ribs from flaring; reduce the range of motion if you cannot control the bridge.
  3. Keep the elbows aligned: Let the movement occur at the elbows rather than swinging the upper arms or shoulders.
