Dumbbell Kneeling Lateral Raise Stability Ball

This advanced lateral raise is performed while kneeling on a stability ball, combining shoulder isolation work with demanding balance control. It primarily targets the lateral deltoids while the core and lower body help maintain a steady kneeling position. It can support shoulder development, coordination, and body control when performed with light, controlled loads.

Instructions

  1. Choose a clear area and place the stability ball on a non-slip surface. Use very light dumbbells.
  2. Kneel on the center of the ball with your torso tall, hips over knees, and arms hanging by your sides with palms facing inward.
  3. Brace your core and establish balance before lifting. Keep your head neutral and shoulders down away from your ears.
  4. Raise both dumbbells outward in a smooth arc, keeping a soft bend in the elbows, until your arms reach about shoulder height.
  5. Pause briefly without shrugging, then lower the dumbbells slowly to your sides while maintaining control of the ball.
  6. Stop the set safely if your balance becomes unstable; step off the ball before changing weight or resting.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize balance over load. This exercise requires far less weight than a standing lateral raise.
  2. Keep the motion controlled. Do not swing the dumbbells or use momentum to reach the top.
  3. Keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis and avoid arching your lower back to compensate.
  4. Use a reduced range of motion or stop if you cannot maintain steady control of the ball.
