Dumbbell One-Arm French Press

The dumbbell one-arm French press is an overhead single-arm triceps extension performed by bending and straightening the elbow. It primarily trains the triceps, especially the long head, while the shoulder and core stabilize the arm and torso. It supports triceps strength, arm development, and overhead pressing control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding one dumbbell overhead with a neutral wrist and the arm nearly straight.
  2. Brace your core and keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis; use the free hand for light balance only if needed.
  3. Lower the dumbbell slowly behind your head by bending only the working elbow. Keep the upper arm as vertical and still as comfortably possible.
  4. Extend the elbow to raise the dumbbell back overhead, contracting the triceps without forcefully locking the elbow.
  5. Complete all repetitions with controlled motion, then switch arms. Stop if you feel sharp pain in the elbow or shoulder.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. Choose a dumbbell that lets you control the lowering phase without leaning backward or flaring the ribs.
  2. Keep the elbow controlled. Avoid letting it drift far out to the side; a small natural movement is acceptable if the shoulder remains comfortable.
  3. Move smoothly. Lower under control and exhale as you extend the elbow; do not use momentum from the torso.
  4. Respect your range. Use only a pain-free depth behind the head and reduce the load if elbow or shoulder discomfort appears.
