Dumbbell Seated Front Raise

The dumbbell seated front raise is an isolation exercise performed while seated, lifting dumbbells forward to shoulder height. It primarily trains the front deltoids and supports shoulder strength, muscular control, and upper-body development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit upright on a bench with both feet flat on the floor. Hold a dumbbell in each hand with your arms straight by your sides and palms facing your thighs.
  2. Brace: Keep your chest tall, shoulders down, and core gently braced. Maintain a neutral spine without leaning back.
  3. Raise: Keeping a slight bend in the elbows, lift both dumbbells forward in a controlled arc until they reach about shoulder height.
  4. Pause: Briefly pause at the top without shrugging your shoulders or swinging your torso.
  5. Lower: Slowly lower the dumbbells along the same path to the starting position. Repeat with smooth, controlled repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Choose dumbbells that allow you to lift without leaning back or using momentum.
  2. Keep shoulders down: Avoid shrugging toward your ears; let the front of the shoulders drive the lift.
  3. Control the lowering phase: Lower slowly instead of letting the dumbbells drop.
  4. Limit the height: Raise to about shoulder level; higher ranges are not necessary for most people.
