Dumbbell Wood Chop

The dumbbell wood chop is a standing diagonal lifting and lowering movement performed while holding one dumbbell with both hands. It primarily trains the obliques and other core muscles while involving the shoulders and legs to control rotation. It supports core strength, rotational control, and whole-body coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart, knees softly bent, and hold one dumbbell securely with both hands.
  2. Brace: Tighten your abdominal muscles, keep your chest lifted, and maintain a neutral spine.
  3. Lift diagonally: Move the dumbbell diagonally upward across your body in a smooth, controlled motion, allowing your torso and hips to rotate naturally.
  4. Chop down: Reverse the motion and bring the dumbbell diagonally down across your body while keeping the movement controlled and your knees softly bent.
  5. Finish evenly: Return to the starting position, complete the planned repetitions, then perform the same number on the other side. Keep the dumbbell close enough to control and stop if you feel sharp pain.

Technique tips

  1. Rotate as a unit: Let your hips and torso turn together; do not force the movement by twisting only through the lower back.
  2. Use controlled resistance: Choose a dumbbell light enough to avoid swinging, jerking, or losing spinal position.
  3. Keep the knees soft: Avoid locking the knees and keep your weight balanced through both feet.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale during the active part of the chop and inhale as you return with control.
