Suitcase Carry

The suitcase carry is a loaded walking exercise performed while holding one dumbbell at your side. It primarily trains the core—especially the obliques—to resist side bending, while also working the grip, shoulders, and lower body. It supports core stability, posture, grip strength, and practical carrying capacity.

Instructions

  1. Choose a manageable dumbbell and place it beside one foot on a clear, level walking path.
  2. Stand tall, hinge slightly at the hips and knees, and grasp the dumbbell with one hand. Stand up by driving through your feet while keeping your spine neutral.
  3. Let the dumbbell hang at your side with a straight arm. Keep your shoulders level, chest tall, and ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  4. Brace your core and walk forward with short, controlled steps. Do not lean toward or away from the weight.
  5. Turn carefully, continue for the planned distance or time, then set the dumbbell down with a controlled hip-and-knee bend. Repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Stay tall: imagine balancing a glass of water on your head to avoid side bending or shrugging.
  2. Use a load that lets you walk smoothly without twisting, limping, or losing shoulder position.
  3. Breathe steadily: maintain a light abdominal brace rather than holding your breath throughout the carry.
  4. Keep turns slow and deliberate, and use a clear path to reduce the chance of tripping.
