Dumbbell Seated Side Bend

The dumbbell seated side bend is an isolation exercise performed while seated, bending the torso sideways against dumbbell resistance. It primarily trains the obliques, with the muscles of the lower back assisting to control the movement. It can support core strength and controlled lateral trunk stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit tall on a stable flat bench with your feet flat on the floor, about hip-width apart.
  2. Hold the dumbbell: Hold one dumbbell in one hand with the arm straight at your side; place the other hand lightly behind your head or across your chest.
  3. Lower with control: Brace your abdomen and slowly bend your torso toward the dumbbell side, allowing only a comfortable side bend. Keep both hips and feet firmly planted.
  4. Return upright: Contract the obliques on the opposite side to bring your torso back to a tall, neutral position. Do not lean backward or forward.
  5. Repeat evenly: Complete the desired repetitions, then switch the dumbbell to the other hand and perform the same number on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load: Choose a dumbbell that allows slow, controlled side bending without pulling you off balance.
  2. Keep the pelvis still: Avoid shifting, rotating, or lifting a hip as you bend.
  3. Move only sideways: Keep your chest facing forward and avoid turning the exercise into a forward or backward bend.
  4. Control the range: Use a comfortable range of motion and stop if the movement causes sharp pain or discomfort.
