Dumbbell Side Bend

The dumbbell side bend is a standing core exercise in which you laterally bend the torso while holding a dumbbell at one side. It primarily trains the obliques, with the abdominal wall and lower back assisting to control the movement. It can support lateral core strength and trunk-control training.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart. Hold one dumbbell in one hand at your side with the arm straight; place the other hand on your hip or behind your head without pulling on the neck.
  2. Brace: Keep your chest lifted, shoulders level, and spine long. Gently brace your abdominal muscles and keep your hips facing forward.
  3. Lower: Inhale and slowly bend your torso directly toward the side holding the dumbbell. Let the dumbbell travel down the outside of your thigh without rotating or leaning forward.
  4. Return: Exhale and use the muscles on the opposite side of your waist to bring your torso back to upright. Finish tall rather than leaning past neutral.
  5. Repeat evenly: Complete the desired repetitions with control, then switch the dumbbell to the other hand and perform the same number of repetitions on the other side.
  6. Control the load: Use a light-to-moderate dumbbell and a comfortable range of motion. Stop if the movement causes sharp pain or cannot be performed without twisting.

Technique tips

  1. Move in one plane: Think about sliding your rib cage sideways rather than twisting, hinging forward, or rotating the shoulders.
  2. Do not chase range: Use only the side-bend range you can control while keeping both feet planted and hips level.
  3. Use deliberate tempo: Lower and return slowly; avoid bouncing or using momentum from the dumbbell.
  4. Keep the load appropriate: A heavier dumbbell is not automatically better. Choose a weight that lets you keep a neutral, controlled torso throughout each repetition.
