Cable Rotational Crunch Supine

The supine cable rotational crunch is a weighted abdominal exercise performed lying on the floor or a bench while pulling a cable and rotating the torso. It primarily targets the obliques, with the rest of the abdominal wall assisting trunk flexion and bracing. It can support core strength and controlled rotational stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the cable low and attach a single handle. Choose a light load that allows smooth torso control.
  2. Lie supine with your head toward the cable, knees bent, and feet firmly planted. Hold the handle with both hands near one side of your head or upper chest, keeping tension on the cable.
  3. Brace your abdomen and keep your lower back comfortably controlled against the floor or bench.
  4. Exhale as you curl your shoulders upward and rotate your rib cage toward the opposite hip, pulling with your abdominals rather than your arms.
  5. Pause briefly, then inhale and slowly return your shoulders and torso to the starting position. Complete the repetitions on one side, then perform the same number on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a modest load. The cable should challenge your abdominals without pulling your shoulders or lower back out of position.
  2. Keep your hips and feet stable; create the rotation through your rib cage rather than swinging your knees.
  3. Do not pull with your arms or neck. Keep the hands and arms quiet while the trunk performs the crunch and rotation.
  4. Move slowly on the return and stop the range of motion if you cannot keep the movement controlled and comfortable.
