Cable Pallof Press with Rotation

The Cable Pallof Press with Rotation is a standing core exercise performed perpendicular to a cable stack. You press the handle away from the chest, then rotate in a controlled manner against the cable's sideways pull. It primarily trains the obliques and overall trunk control while also involving the shoulders and hips, supporting rotational strength and stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley at about chest height and attach a single handle. Choose a light load that allows smooth, controlled rotation.
  2. Stand sideways to the cable stack with feet about hip-width apart. Hold the handle with both hands at the center of your chest and step away until the cable has tension.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, and press the handle straight out until your arms are nearly extended.
  4. Keeping your arms extended, rotate your chest and hips together away from the cable in a comfortable range. Allow the feet to pivot slightly if needed; do not twist only through the low back.
  5. Pause briefly, then rotate back to square without letting the cable pull you abruptly. Bend the elbows to return the handle to your chest and repeat.
  6. Complete all repetitions with one side facing the stack, then turn around and perform the same number on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first. The resistance should challenge control, not force you to lean, jerk, or shorten the movement.
  2. Keep your pelvis and rib cage moving as one unit during the rotation; avoid excessive lumbar twisting.
  3. Exhale as you press and rotate, then inhale steadily as you return.
  4. Use the same controlled range of motion and repetition count on both sides.
