Dumbbell Wrist Curl Palms Down

The dumbbell wrist curl palms down is an isolation exercise for the wrist extensor muscles on the top of the forearm. With the forearms supported and palms facing down, the wrists lift dumbbells through a controlled range of motion. It supports forearm strength, grip balance, and control for lifting and daily activities.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit beside a bench or other stable support, holding a light dumbbell in each hand with palms facing down.
  2. Support the forearms: Rest both forearms on the support with the wrists just beyond its edge. Keep the elbows and forearms still.
  3. Lower slowly: Let the dumbbells descend by bending the wrists downward in a comfortable, controlled range.
  4. Lift with the wrists: Raise the backs of the hands toward the forearms by extending the wrists, without lifting the forearms from the support.
  5. Finish under control: Pause briefly at the top, then lower slowly and repeat. Use a light load and stop if you feel sharp pain.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load light: The wrist extensors are small muscles; prioritize smooth control over heavier dumbbells.
  2. Do not swing: Keep the forearms supported so the motion comes only from the wrists, not the elbows or shoulders.
  3. Use a comfortable range: Avoid forcing the wrists into an extreme bend at the bottom or snapping them upward.
  4. Breathe naturally: Exhale as you lift and inhale as you lower, while keeping your grip secure but not excessively tight.
