EZ Bar Decline Tricep Extension

The EZ Bar Decline Triceps Extension is a lying isolation exercise performed on a decline bench. It primarily trains the triceps through elbow extension, with the decline position changing the arm angle and challenge compared with a flat-bench version. It supports triceps strength and muscle development for pressing movements.

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Adjust a decline bench so your feet or ankles are firmly secured. Hold an EZ bar with a comfortable overhand grip and sit down carefully.
  2. Take the start position: Lie back with your head supported and press the bar above your chest. Keep your arms nearly vertical, wrists neutral, and elbows pointing generally forward.
  3. Lower under control: Bend only at the elbows and lower the bar slowly toward your forehead or just behind it. Keep your upper arms as still as possible.
  4. Extend the elbows: Contract your triceps to straighten your arms and return the bar to the starting position without forcefully locking the elbows.
  5. Repeat safely: Use a controlled range of motion for all repetitions. Rack the bar or hand it to a spotter before releasing it; do not sit up while holding the bar overhead.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load: Start light enough to keep the bar path steady and your elbows controlled.
  2. Keep elbows from flaring: Avoid letting them drift widely outward, which can reduce triceps focus and make the movement less stable.
  3. Protect the wrists: Keep wrists stacked and neutral rather than letting them bend backward under the bar.
  4. Use assistance when needed: Because you are secured on a decline bench, a spotter is useful for lifting off and re-racking heavier loads.
