Hack Squat

The machine hack squat is a guided lower-body squat performed on a hack squat machine. It primarily trains the quadriceps, with substantial involvement from the glutes and hamstrings. It supports leg strength and muscle development while the machine provides a fixed movement path.

Instructions

  1. Set the machine: Adjust the shoulder pads and foot platform if possible, then select a light load for practice.
  2. Position yourself: Place your back and shoulders firmly against the pads, brace your torso, and put your feet about shoulder-width apart on the platform.
  3. Release the safety handles: Keep your knees softly bent rather than locked, and maintain full contact between your back and the pad.
  4. Lower with control: Bend your knees and hips to descend along the machine path. Keep your knees tracking in the same direction as your toes and keep your heels planted.
  5. Drive upward: Push through your mid-foot and heels to extend your knees and hips, stopping just short of locking the knees.
  6. Finish safely: Complete the set under control, return the carriage to the secure position, and engage the safety handles before stepping out.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Learn the machine's range and safety stops before increasing the weight.
  2. Keep knee alignment: Do not allow the knees to collapse inward; they should track over the toes.
  3. Control the depth: Descend only as far as you can while keeping your heels down, back supported, and pelvis stable.
  4. Breathe steadily: Inhale on the descent, brace your trunk, and exhale as you push upward.
