Machine Leg Press

The machine leg press is a compound lower-body exercise performed by pressing a loaded platform away with the feet. It primarily trains the quadriceps, with meaningful involvement from the glutes and calves, and supports leg strength and muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine: Adjust the seat or backrest so your lower back and hips stay supported against the pads.
  2. Position your feet: Place both feet about hip- to shoulder-width apart on the platform, with your whole foot in contact and toes pointing generally forward.
  3. Release the safeties: Brace your abdomen, keep your head against the pad, and unlock the handles only when you control the platform.
  4. Lower under control: Bend your knees and hips to bring the platform toward you, keeping your knees aligned with your toes and your lower back in contact with the pad.
  5. Press the platform away: Drive through your midfoot and heel to extend your knees and hips smoothly without lifting your hips or rounding your lower back.
  6. Finish safely: Stop just short of forcefully locking the knees, control the final repetition, and re-engage the safety catches before leaving the machine.

Technique tips

  1. Use a controlled range: Lower only as far as you can keep your hips and lower back firmly supported.
  2. Track the knees: Keep each knee moving in the same direction as its toes; do not let the knees collapse inward.
  3. Control the load: Use a weight that allows smooth repetitions without bouncing the platform or losing position.
  4. Breathe steadily: Inhale as the platform lowers and exhale as you press it away while maintaining abdominal tension.
