Machine Leg Press Narrow Stance

The narrow-stance machine leg press is a compound lower-body exercise performed on a leg press machine with the feet positioned relatively close together. It primarily trains the quadriceps while the glutes and hamstrings assist with pressing the platform. It supports leg strength and muscle development with a stable, machine-guided movement path.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the machine: Adjust the seat or backrest so your lower back and hips remain supported against the pads throughout the movement.
  2. Position your feet: Place both feet near the middle of the platform, about hip-width or slightly narrower, with toes and knees pointing in the same direction.
  3. Start safely: Release the safety handles while keeping the platform controlled. Begin with knees bent only as far as you can without your pelvis or lower back lifting from the pad.
  4. Press the platform: Exhale as you push through your whole foot to extend the knees and hips. Keep the knees tracking over the toes and do not lock them forcefully.
  5. Return with control: Inhale and slowly lower the platform back to the starting depth, maintaining contact between your back, hips, and the pads.
  6. Finish securely: Complete the set under control, engage the safety handles, and only then relax your legs.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Choose resistance that lets you control both the descent and the press without shifting your pelvis.
  2. Keep the knees aligned: Do not allow the knees to cave inward; keep them tracking in line with the toes.
  3. Maintain foot contact: Keep your heels and the rest of each foot firmly on the platform rather than pushing only through the toes.
  4. Respect your range of motion: Stop the lowering phase before your lower back rounds or your hips lift from the pad.
