Smith Machine Squat to Bench

The Smith Machine Squat to Bench is a controlled squat performed in a Smith machine, using a bench as a consistent depth target. It primarily trains the quadriceps, with substantial contribution from the glutes. It supports lower-body strength, squat technique, and controlled range-of-motion training.

Instructions

  1. Set the bench behind you in the Smith machine so its height provides a comfortable, repeatable squat depth. Position the bar around upper-chest height.
  2. Stand with the bar across your upper back, not your neck. Place your feet about shoulder width apart and slightly in front of the bar path, with toes turned out comfortably.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest tall, and unlock the bar. Begin by bending your hips and knees together while keeping your feet flat.
  4. Lower under control until your glutes lightly touch the bench. Do not drop onto the bench or relax at the bottom.
  5. Drive through your whole foot to extend your knees and hips, returning to a tall standing position. Re-rack the bar securely after the set.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light touch: the bench is a depth reference, not a seat; keep tension in your legs and trunk.
  2. Keep your knees tracking in the same direction as your toes, without collapsing inward.
  3. Control the load: choose a weight that allows a smooth descent and ascent without bouncing or shifting your feet.
