Machine Squat

The machine squat is a guided lower-body squat performed on a strength-training machine. It primarily trains the quadriceps, with meaningful involvement from the glutes, while reducing balance demands compared with a free-weight squat. It supports lower-body strength, muscle development, and controlled squat-pattern practice.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine according to its design, adjusting the seat, back support, or shoulder pads so you can place your feet securely on the platform.
  2. Position your feet about shoulder-width apart, keep your whole feet supported, and brace your abdomen while keeping your back in contact with the pad where applicable.
  3. Lower under control by bending your hips and knees. Keep your knees tracking in the same direction as your toes and descend only as far as you can without losing a neutral, stable position.
  4. Press through your feet to return to the start, extending the knees and hips smoothly without forcefully locking the knees. Keep the movement controlled and use a load that allows consistent form.

Technique tips

  1. Use a controlled tempo: avoid dropping into the bottom position or bouncing off the machine stops.
  2. Keep knee alignment: do not let the knees collapse inward as you lower or press upward.
  3. Start conservatively: learn the machine's range and resistance with a light load before adding weight.
