Jump Shot

The basketball jump shot is a shooting skill in which the player jumps vertically and releases the ball at the peak or on the way up. It develops lower-body power, coordination, balance, and shoulder and arm control while supporting basketball shooting accuracy and game performance.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand balanced with feet about shoulder-width apart, knees softly bent, and the basket in front of you. Hold the basketball near chest level with the shooting hand under the ball and the guide hand lightly on its side.
  2. Load and rise: Bend the hips and knees slightly, keeping the chest tall and eyes on the target. Drive upward through both feet into a controlled vertical jump.
  3. Release: As you rise, bring the ball smoothly to the shooting position and extend the legs, elbow, and wrist toward the basket. Release the ball near the top of the jump with the shooting elbow directed toward the rim.
  4. Finish and land: Hold a relaxed follow-through with fingers pointing toward the target, then land softly on both feet with knees bent. Regain balance before moving or taking another shot.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize vertical lift: Jump upward rather than drifting forward or sideways to make your release and landing more consistent.
  2. Use the guide hand lightly: It stabilizes the ball but should not push it during the release.
  3. Land under control: Absorb the landing with bent knees and avoid shooting through fatigue when your balance or form breaks down.
