Kettlebell Thruster

The kettlebell thruster combines a deep squat with an overhead press performed in one continuous movement. It primarily trains the quadriceps, glutes, and shoulders while also challenging core stability and cardiovascular conditioning. It supports full-body strength, power, and work capacity.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart and hold one kettlebell close to the chest by the horns, with elbows pointing down and slightly forward.
  2. Squat: Brace the abdomen, keep the chest tall, and sit down between the hips until you reach a controlled depth while keeping the feet flat.
  3. Drive up: Push firmly through the whole foot to stand, extending the hips and knees together.
  4. Press: Use the upward leg drive to guide the kettlebell overhead, then finish with the arms straight and the kettlebell balanced over the middle of the body.
  5. Return: Lower the kettlebell under control to the chest, reset your balance, and begin the next repetition. Keep the spine neutral throughout.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load: You should be able to keep the kettlebell close to the body and finish each press without leaning back.
  2. Drive before pressing: Let the legs initiate the upward force; do not turn the movement into a slow press from the bottom of the squat.
  3. Keep the knees aligned: Track the knees in line with the toes and avoid letting them collapse inward during the squat.
  4. Breathe with control: Brace before descending, then exhale as you stand and press overhead.
