Kettlebell Goblet Squat

The kettlebell goblet squat is a squat performed while holding a kettlebell close to the chest. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while challenging the abdominal muscles to keep the torso stable. It supports lower-body strength, squat technique, and general functional fitness.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and place the kettlebell on the floor between them.
  2. Hold the bell: Lift it safely and hold it vertically by the horns close to your chest, with elbows pointing down and slightly forward.
  3. Brace: Keep your chest tall, spine neutral, and abdomen gently braced; let your knees track in the same direction as your toes.
  4. Squat down: Push your hips down and back, bending the knees until you reach a comfortable depth without losing spinal position or heel contact.
  5. Stand up: Drive through the whole foot to stand, extending the knees and hips together while keeping the kettlebell close to the body.
  6. Finish controlled: Exhale near the top, reset your balance, and use a lighter kettlebell if you cannot maintain control or alignment.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load close: Holding the kettlebell against the chest reduces unnecessary strain on the arms and lower back.
  2. Maintain foot pressure: Keep the heel, base of the big toe, and base of the little toe in contact with the floor.
  3. Control knee position: Do not let the knees collapse inward; reduce depth or load if this happens.
  4. Breathe with control: Inhale and brace before descending, then exhale as you stand.
