Kettlebell Pistol Squat

The kettlebell pistol squat is a single-leg squat performed while holding a kettlebell close to the chest for counterbalance and resistance. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while demanding substantial ankle mobility, hip control, balance, and core stability. It supports single-leg strength, coordination, and lower-body control.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Hold a kettlebell by the horns close to your chest with both hands. Stand tall on one foot and extend the other leg forward without locking the knee.
  2. Brace: Keep your chest lifted, ribs controlled, and standing foot planted through the heel and midfoot. Reach the extended leg forward and keep the pelvis level.
  3. Lower: Inhale and slowly bend the standing knee and hip, sitting down between your heel and extended leg. Keep the knee tracking in line with the toes and maintain a neutral spine.
  4. Stand: Descend only as far as you can control, then press through the standing foot to return to upright while exhaling. Complete the desired repetitions, then switch sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Start with a light kettlebell; the added load should not pull your chest forward or compromise balance.
  2. Keep the heel down: Avoid letting the standing heel lift or the knee collapse inward. Reduce depth if either occurs.
  3. Control every phase: Move slowly, especially on the descent, and stop if you lose balance or cannot keep the spine neutral.
