Maceball Side Swing

The macebell side swing is a rotational strength exercise in which a weighted mace is swung in a controlled arc beside the body. It primarily trains the obliques and core while challenging the shoulders, upper back, grip, and coordination. It can support rotational strength, core control, and shoulder stability when performed with a manageable load.

Instructions

  1. Choose a light macebell and stand tall with feet about shoulder-width apart. Hold the handle with both hands, keeping the weighted head close to the body.
  2. Brace your core, soften the knees, and keep the chest lifted. Let the shoulders stay down and away from the ears.
  3. Swing the macebell to one side in a smooth, controlled arc, allowing the torso and hips to rotate together while maintaining a neutral spine.
  4. Guide the macebell back through center using the core, shoulders, and grip rather than pulling abruptly with the arms.
  5. Repeat evenly on both sides. Keep the arc controlled and stop if you cannot maintain balance, posture, or a secure grip.

Technique tips

  1. Start lighter than expected. The offset weight creates substantial leverage, so prioritize control over load.
  2. Rotate as one unit. Let the feet, hips, and torso contribute; do not force the movement through the lower back.
  3. Keep the macebell close. A controlled path close to the body reduces unnecessary pulling on the shoulders.
  4. Breathe steadily. Exhale through the effort and avoid holding your breath for long repetitions.
