Cable Russian Twist Stability Ball

The Cable Russian Twist on a stability ball is a resisted trunk-rotation exercise performed with the upper back supported on the ball. It primarily trains the obliques and abdominal muscles while challenging core control and shoulder stability. It can support rotational strength, core endurance, and control during athletic or everyday twisting movements.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the cable: Position a cable handle at about chest height and select a light load that you can control without shifting on the ball.
  2. Set up on the ball: Sit in front of the cable, then walk your feet forward until your upper back is supported on the stability ball. Keep feet flat, knees bent, hips lifted, and your body in a stable bridge position.
  3. Take the handle: Hold the handle with both hands close to your chest, extend your arms comfortably, and brace your abdominals while keeping the pelvis level.
  4. Rotate with control: Turn your rib cage and arms away from the cable under control, allowing the torso to rotate while the hips and feet remain as still as possible.
  5. Return and repeat: Exhale as you rotate back toward the cable, stop before your shoulders or hips lose position, then complete all repetitions before switching sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first: The ball reduces stability, so increase resistance only when you can keep your hips level and feet planted.
  2. Rotate through the torso: Move the rib cage as one unit rather than pulling mainly with the arms or twisting the knees.
  3. Keep the bridge steady: Avoid letting the hips sag, lift excessively, or rotate toward the cable.
  4. Control both directions: Do not let the cable pull you back quickly; return slowly and breathe out during the active rotation.
