Weighted Side Bend

The weighted side bend is a standing isolation exercise in which you bend the torso sideways while holding an external weight. It primarily trains the obliques, with the abdominal wall and lower back helping stabilize the trunk. It can support core strength, lateral trunk control, and balanced abdominal development.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart. Hold one manageable external weight at your side with a straight arm; rest the other hand on your hip.
  2. Brace: Keep your chest lifted, shoulders level, knees softly bent, and abdomen gently braced. Maintain a neutral head and spine.
  3. Bend sideways: Slowly lower the weight by bending only through the waist toward the weighted side. Keep the hips facing forward and avoid twisting or leaning forward.
  4. Return with control: Contract the obliques on the opposite side to bring your torso back to upright. Pause without leaning past neutral, complete the repetitions, then switch sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use a modest load: Choose a weight that lets you move slowly without pulling the shoulder down or losing torso alignment.
  2. Avoid momentum: Do not swing, rotate, or lean backward. The movement should be a controlled side bend.
  3. Breathe steadily: Exhale as you return upright and inhale during the lowering phase. Stop if the movement causes sharp discomfort.
