Cable Twist Stability Ball

The cable twist on a stability ball is a seated rotational core exercise performed while maintaining balance on the ball. It primarily trains the obliques and other abdominal muscles, while the hips and back help stabilize the body. It can support core strength, rotational control, and trunk stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley at about chest height and attach a single handle; choose a light load that you can control.
  2. Place a stability ball beside the pulley and sit tall on it with feet flat, about hip-width apart. Step far enough from the machine that the cable has tension.
  3. Hold the handle with both hands and extend the arms comfortably in front of the chest. Brace the abdomen and keep the pelvis level on the ball.
  4. Exhale and rotate the rib cage and shoulders away from the pulley in a smooth, controlled motion. Keep the arms as a connected unit rather than pulling mainly with the arms.
  5. Pause briefly without leaning, bouncing, or letting the hips slide, then inhale as you return slowly to the start.
  6. Complete all repetitions with control, then reposition the ball and repeat on the other side. Stop if balance is lost or you cannot keep the trunk controlled.

Technique tips

  1. Start light: the ball adds a balance demand, so prioritize steady posture over heavy cable resistance.
  2. Move through the torso: rotate the ribs and shoulders together while keeping the pelvis as quiet and level as possible.
  3. Avoid momentum: do not bounce on the ball or jerk the handle; use a slow return to keep tension controlled.
  4. Keep both feet grounded: a stable foot position improves balance and reduces unwanted movement on the ball.
