Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is off-road cycling on trails and uneven terrain using a mountain bike. It develops cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, balance, coordination, and bike-handling skills. It can support aerobic fitness, outdoor recreation, and lower-body conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bike: inspect the brakes, tires, chain, pedals, and suspension if fitted; adjust the saddle and wear a correctly fitted helmet.
  2. Choose an appropriate route: begin on trails that match your experience, and check the surface, weather, and local trail rules before riding.
  3. Use a balanced riding position: keep your eyes ahead, elbows and knees slightly bent, hands relaxed on the bars, and your weight centered over the bike.
  4. Pedal and shift smoothly: select an easier gear before steep climbs, maintain a controlled cadence, and avoid forcing the pedals under excessive resistance.
  5. Manage descents and turns: lower your torso, keep your heels slightly down, brake progressively with both brakes, and look through the turn toward your intended line.
  6. Ride within control: slow down for unfamiliar obstacles, yield as required, and stop if fatigue or trail conditions make safe handling difficult.

Technique tips

  1. Look ahead: focus several meters down the trail rather than directly at the front wheel.
  2. Brake before obstacles: reduce speed before entering loose sections, steep descents, or tight corners instead of braking abruptly in them.
  3. Keep movements relaxed: allow bent arms and legs to absorb terrain while keeping a light, secure grip.
  4. Build gradually: increase trail difficulty, duration, and speed progressively as handling skills and fitness improve.
