Road Cycling

Road cycling is continuous outdoor cycling on paved roads using a road bike. It primarily develops cardiovascular endurance and also trains the legs and glutes. It supports aerobic fitness, cycling efficiency, and endurance performance.

Instructions

  1. Inspect your bike before riding: check tire condition and pressure, brakes, chain, and that the saddle and helmet are secure.
  2. Set your position with a relaxed grip, bent elbows, level shoulders, and a neutral spine; keep your knees tracking in line with your feet.
  3. Start easily in a low gear and pedal smoothly, gradually increasing effort only after you are warmed up.
  4. Shift gears early to maintain a comfortable cadence, using easier gears for climbs and harder gears only when you can pedal without straining.
  5. Ride predictably by following traffic rules, scanning ahead, signaling clearly, and leaving space from vehicles, obstacles, and other riders.
  6. Finish gradually by reducing pace for several minutes and stopping in a safe location before dismounting.

Technique tips

  1. Keep pedaling smooth rather than pushing hard at the bottom of each stroke.
  2. Relax your upper body; tense hands and locked elbows can reduce control and comfort.
  3. Match effort to conditions and use easier gears before your cadence slows excessively on climbs.
  4. Carry water and plan your route, especially for longer rides or warm conditions.
