Shuttle Run

The shuttle run is a conditioning drill in which you run repeatedly between two markers, changing direction at each end. It primarily develops cardiovascular fitness, acceleration, deceleration, agility, and change-of-direction control. It can support sport conditioning and general running fitness.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up two clear markers on a flat, dry surface with enough open space around them.
  2. Warm up with easy jogging and dynamic lower-body movements before running fast.
  3. Start behind one marker in an athletic stance, with your torso slightly forward and your eyes toward the opposite marker.
  4. Accelerate toward the far marker using quick, controlled steps and active arm swings.
  5. As you approach the line, decelerate under control, lower your hips, plant the outside foot, and turn without letting the knee collapse inward.
  6. Push off toward the other marker and continue for the planned number of shuttles or time. Finish by slowing to an easy walk rather than stopping abruptly.

Technique tips

  1. Control the turn: begin slowing down before the marker instead of planting and twisting at full speed.
  2. Keep your steps short as you enter and leave each turn to maintain balance and traction.
  3. Build intensity gradually: use a sustainable pace first, then increase speed only while your turns remain controlled.
  4. Use a clear, non-slip surface and stop if you cannot change direction with control.
