Pilates

Pilates is a controlled movement practice that combines core strengthening, posture work, mobility, balance, and breathing. It primarily develops the abdominal muscles and deep trunk stabilizers while also engaging the back, glutes, and legs. It supports core endurance, body awareness, movement control, and general flexibility.

Instructions

  1. Prepare your space: Use a clear, non-slip floor and wear clothing that allows comfortable movement.
  2. Set your starting posture: Begin lying, sitting, kneeling, or standing as the selected exercise requires; lengthen through the spine and keep your neck relaxed.
  3. Engage the core: Exhale gently to draw the lower abdomen inward and brace the trunk without holding your breath.
  4. Move with control: Perform each movement slowly through a comfortable range, keeping the pelvis and ribs aligned and avoiding momentum.
  5. Coordinate breathing: Inhale to prepare and exhale during the effort, maintaining smooth and quiet breaths.
  6. Finish gradually: Return to an easy position, relax the muscles, and stop or reduce the range if you feel pain or loss of control.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize precision: Use a smaller range of motion if it helps you keep the spine, pelvis, and ribs controlled.
  2. Avoid neck tension: Keep the shoulders away from the ears and support the head when an exercise requires it.
  3. Do not force flexibility: Work only within a comfortable range and avoid pushing into sharp pain.
