Smith Machine Incline Shoulder Raise

The Smith Machine Incline Shoulder Raise is an isolation exercise performed against an incline bench while raising the bar with the shoulders. It primarily targets the front deltoids, with the upper chest assisting the movement. It can help build shoulder strength, control, and muscular definition with a guided bar path.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set an adjustable bench to a moderate incline and place it inside the Smith machine so the bar can travel directly in front of your upper body.
  2. Stand facing the bench and lean your chest firmly against its backrest. Plant your feet securely, keep a soft bend in the knees, and brace your abdomen.
  3. Set the bar at about thigh level and take an overhand grip just outside shoulder width. Unrack it with straight but not locked elbows.
  4. Keeping your torso against the bench, raise the bar forward and upward by lifting from the shoulders until your arms are approximately parallel to the floor or your comfortable shoulder range ends.
  5. Pause briefly, then lower the bar slowly along the same path without swinging or arching your back. Re-rack the bar securely after the set.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first. The fixed bar path does not replace shoulder control.
  2. Keep your chest in contact with the bench and avoid using momentum from the hips or lower back.
  3. Raise only through a pain-free range; stop before the shoulders roll forward or shrug excessively.
