Stability Ball Back Stretch

The stability ball back stretch is a gentle mobility exercise performed by reclining the upper back over a stability ball. It lengthens the muscles of the back and front of the torso while encouraging thoracic extension and relaxed breathing. It can support posture, spinal mobility, and recovery after prolonged sitting or training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Place a properly inflated stability ball on a clear, non-slip surface.
  2. Sit in front of the ball, then slowly lean back until the ball supports your upper and middle back; keep both feet planted about hip-width apart.
  3. Support your head and neck with your hands or keep your arms relaxed out to the sides, whichever allows your neck to stay comfortable.
  4. Gently allow your chest to open over the ball and lengthen through your spine without forcing your low back into a sharp arch.
  5. Breathe slowly and hold the comfortable stretch, keeping your hips stable and feet firmly on the floor.
  6. To finish, engage your abdominal muscles, return upright slowly, and step away from the ball with control.

Technique tips

  1. Use a stable setup: keep the ball on a non-slip surface and position it away from walls, furniture, and loose objects.
  2. Keep the stretch gentle; seek an opening through the upper and middle back rather than compressing the lower back.
  3. Do not hold your breath. Slow, steady breathing helps you avoid tensing through the shoulders and neck.
  4. Come out of the position immediately if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, or loss of balance.
