Thoracic Extension

Thoracic extension is a mobility exercise that moves the middle and upper back into controlled extension. It emphasizes thoracic-spine mobility and postural awareness while gently engaging the upper-back muscles. It can support comfortable overhead movement, upright posture, and general upper-body mobility.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up tall: Sit or stand upright with your feet supported and your pelvis in a neutral position.
  2. Position your hands: Place your hands lightly behind your head, keeping your elbows comfortably wide and your neck relaxed.
  3. Brace gently: Exhale and lightly engage your abdominal muscles to keep the movement from coming primarily from the low back.
  4. Extend through the upper back: Slowly lift your chest and gently arch through the middle and upper back while looking forward or slightly upward.
  5. Return with control: Pause briefly without forcing the range, then return to tall neutral posture and repeat smoothly.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the neck long: Do not pull the head forward with your hands or force the chin upward.
  2. Move from the thoracic spine: Keep the ribs controlled and avoid exaggerating the arch in the low back.
  3. Use a comfortable range: Move slowly and stop if the motion causes sharp pain, dizziness, or numbness.
