Upper Back Stretch

The upper back stretch is a gentle static stretch performed by reaching the arms forward and rounding the upper back slightly. It targets the muscles around the shoulder blades and upper back, while also easing shoulder tension and supporting comfortable posture and mobility.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand or sit tall with your feet supported and your spine in a comfortable neutral position.
  2. Reach both arms forward at shoulder height and interlace your fingers or place one palm over the other.
  3. Gently press your hands away while allowing your shoulder blades to move apart and your upper back to round slightly.
  4. Keep your shoulders relaxed away from your ears, soften your neck, and breathe slowly without forcing the position.
  5. Hold the stretch comfortably, then release with control. Stop if you feel pain, numbness, or tingling.

Technique tips

  1. Aim for space between the shoulder blades rather than pulling hard on the arms.
  2. Keep the movement gentle; excessive rounding or force is unnecessary.
  3. Use slow breathing and relax more into the stretch with each exhale.
