Stability Ball Crunch

The stability ball crunch is an abdominal exercise performed with the lower back supported on an exercise ball. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis through controlled spinal flexion, while the ball adds a balance and trunk-control demand. It can support core strength and abdominal endurance.

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Sit on an exercise ball with your feet flat on the floor, about hip-width apart.
  2. Find your position: Walk your feet forward and roll down until your lower back is supported on the ball. Keep your knees bent and your hips level.
  3. Brace: Place your hands lightly beside your head or across your chest. Keep your neck long, look upward, and gently brace your abdomen.
  4. Crunch up: Exhale as you lift your shoulder blades by curling your rib cage toward your pelvis. Keep your hips stable on the ball.
  5. Return with control: Inhale and slowly lower until your back follows the curve of the ball. Do not forcefully arch your lower back, then repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the ball secure: Use a non-slip surface and choose a ball size that lets you keep both feet firmly planted.
  2. Do not pull your head: Hands should only support the head lightly; initiate each repetition with the abdominal muscles.
  3. Use a comfortable range: Lift only until the shoulder blades clear the ball, then lower slowly without losing control.
  4. Control the ball: If the ball rolls excessively or your hips drop, reduce the range of motion and reset your position.
