Stability Ball Abdominal Curl

The stability ball abdominal curl is a crunch performed with the lower back supported on a stability ball. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis while requiring controlled trunk stability. The ball allows a comfortable range of spinal flexion and can support core-strength and abdominal-endurance goals.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Sit on a stability ball, then walk your feet forward until the ball supports your lower back. Keep your feet about hip-width apart and firmly planted on the floor.
  2. Find a stable position: Lean back over the ball with your knees bent roughly to 90 degrees. Place your hands lightly at your temples or cross your arms over your chest; do not pull on your neck.
  3. Brace your core: Exhale gently, tighten your abdominal muscles, and keep your hips steady against the ball.
  4. Curl up: Lift your head and shoulders by curling your rib cage toward your pelvis. Keep the movement small and controlled rather than sitting all the way up.
  5. Return with control: Inhale as you slowly lower your shoulders back over the ball until you feel a comfortable abdominal stretch. Keep your feet grounded and repeat without bouncing.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the ball still: If the ball rolls excessively, reset your foot position before continuing.
  2. Move from the ribs: Think about bringing the ribs toward the pelvis rather than pulling the head forward.
  3. Use a comfortable range: Stop the descent before any discomfort in the lower back or neck occurs.
  4. Control your breathing: Exhale during the curl and inhale as you return.
