Stability Ball Incline Abdominal Crunch

The Stability Ball Incline Abdominal Crunch is a trunk-flexion exercise performed with the lower back supported on a stability ball and the torso held at an incline. It primarily trains the abdominal muscles, especially the upper portion of the rectus abdominis, while the ball adds a balance and control challenge. It can support core strength, trunk-control, and abdominal endurance goals.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Sit on a stability ball, then walk your feet forward until the ball supports your lower back. Keep your feet flat, about hip-width apart.
  2. Find the incline: Lean back over the ball so your hips stay lower than your shoulders. Brace your abdomen and keep your knees bent.
  3. Position your hands: Place your fingertips lightly beside your head or cross your arms over your chest. Do not pull on your neck.
  4. Crunch upward: Exhale and curl your rib cage toward your pelvis, lifting your shoulder blades from the ball. Keep the movement slow and controlled.
  5. Return with control: Inhale as you lower until your back follows the curve of the ball without excessively arching. Keep the ball steady and repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Stabilize first: Set your feet firmly and keep the ball from rolling before beginning each repetition.
  2. Keep the range focused: Lift the shoulder blades rather than sitting all the way up; the motion should come from curling the trunk.
  3. Protect the neck: Keep your chin slightly tucked and your gaze upward. Your hands should support neither the head nor the movement.
  4. Control the tempo: Exhale on the curl and avoid dropping quickly into the stretched position.
