Stability Ball Weight Plate Side Bend

The Stability Ball Weight Plate Side Bend is a weighted lateral-flexion exercise performed while supported sideways over a stability ball. It primarily trains the obliques while the ball challenges trunk control and balance. It can support core strength and controlled side-bending capacity.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Place a stability ball on a non-slip surface and position your outer foot securely against the floor or a stable support.
  2. Take the side-support position: Lie sideways over the ball with the ball under the side of your pelvis and lower ribs. Keep your legs braced and your body aligned from head to foot.
  3. Hold the plate: Hold a light weight plate close to your chest with both hands. Start with your torso slightly lowered toward the floor without collapsing through the shoulder or hips.
  4. Bend to the side: Exhale and contract the obliques to raise your torso until it forms a straight line with your legs. Move smoothly and keep the hips stable on the ball.
  5. Return with control: Inhale as you slowly lower to the starting stretch, using only a comfortable range of motion. Complete the repetitions, then reposition and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light plate first: Master balance and a smooth range of motion before increasing the load.
  2. Keep the movement lateral: Do not rotate the chest or pull with the neck; let the obliques create the lift.
  3. Secure the setup: Keep the ball on a non-slip surface and stop if you cannot maintain stable foot contact.
  4. Control both phases: Avoid bouncing off the ball or dropping quickly into the bottom position.
