Stability Ball Push-Up

The stability ball push-up is a bodyweight push-up performed with the hands supported on a stability ball. The unstable surface challenges the chest, triceps, shoulders, and core control while developing upper-body pushing strength and balance. It can support muscular endurance and stability when performed with controlled technique.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball on a firm, non-slip surface and kneel behind it. Place both hands on the upper sides of the ball, about shoulder width apart.
  2. Walk your feet back until your body forms a straight line from head to heels. Keep your legs straight, brace your abdomen, and keep the ball centered under your hands.
  3. Lower with control by bending your elbows and bringing your chest toward the ball. Keep your elbows angled slightly back rather than flared far out.
  4. Press through your hands to return to the starting position while keeping the ball as still as possible. Exhale as you press up.
  5. Maintain alignment throughout each repetition. Stop the set if the ball rolls excessively or you cannot keep your back neutral.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a secure surface. Use a properly inflated ball on non-slip flooring and keep it away from walls or obstacles.
  2. Move slowly. Prioritize keeping the ball stable over performing more repetitions or a deeper range of motion.
  3. Brace before each repetition. Keep your ribs down and avoid letting the hips sag or rise.
  4. Adjust the difficulty safely. Start from the knees or use a larger, more stable ball setup until you can control the full position.
