Towel Tricep Extension

The Towel Triceps Extension is an isolation exercise that uses a towel to provide manual resistance while straightening the elbow. It primarily trains the triceps and can help build elbow-extension strength and control without conventional weights. The resistance is adjusted by how firmly the assisting hand pulls the towel.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Hold a towel vertically behind your back. Grasp one end with one hand overhead and the other end with the opposite hand behind your lower back.
  2. Set the working arm. Keep the overhead elbow bent, pointed generally upward, and close to your head; stand tall with your ribs down.
  3. Create light resistance. Use the lower hand to pull down on the towel just enough to resist the overhead arm.
  4. Extend the elbow. Straighten the overhead arm by contracting the triceps while the lower hand maintains smooth, controlled tension on the towel.
  5. Return slowly. Bend the overhead elbow under control, keep the upper arm mostly still, complete the repetitions, then switch arm positions.

Technique tips

  1. Use modest tension. The lower hand should resist the movement, not overpower it or jerk the towel.
  2. Keep the upper arm steady. Avoid letting the overhead elbow drift far forward or flare widely outward.
  3. Move without pain. Use a comfortable range of motion and reduce tension if the shoulder or elbow feels painful.
  4. Breathe continuously. Exhale as you straighten the elbow and inhale as you return.
