Weight Plate Russian Twist

The weight plate Russian twist is a seated rotational core exercise performed while holding a weight plate. It primarily trains the obliques and abdominal muscles while challenging trunk control and hip stability. It can support core strength and rotational control for general fitness training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit on the floor with your knees bent, feet together, and hold a weight plate with both hands close to your chest.
  2. Lean back slightly: Brace your abdominal muscles and lean your torso back while keeping your chest lifted and spine long. Keep your heels on the floor for a more stable starting position.
  3. Rotate with control: Move the plate toward one side by rotating your rib cage and shoulders together. Keep your hips as still as possible and avoid rounding your lower back.
  4. Return and alternate: Bring the plate back through the center, then rotate to the other side. Continue with a smooth, controlled tempo, exhaling during each rotation.
  5. Finish safely: Stop the set if you cannot maintain a neutral, controlled trunk position. Set the plate down carefully before standing.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable plate: Use a load that lets you rotate without pulling with your arms or losing trunk position.
  2. Move from the torso: Turn the shoulders and rib cage together rather than swinging the plate with the hands.
  3. Keep the range comfortable: Rotate only as far as you can while keeping your lower back controlled and your hips relatively still.
  4. Progress gradually: Increase the plate weight only after you can perform consistent, controlled repetitions on both sides.
