Weighted Decline Rotation

The weighted decline rotation is an abdominal exercise performed on a decline bench while holding a weight and rotating the torso from side to side. It primarily targets the obliques, with the rest of the abdominal wall helping stabilize the trunk. It supports core strength, rotational control, and trunk stability.

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Position yourself on a decline bench with your feet firmly anchored under the pads. Hold a light weight plate close to your chest with both hands.
  2. Brace your trunk: Lean back until your torso is supported by your abdominal muscles, keeping your chest lifted and your spine long rather than rounded.
  3. Rotate with control: Turn your rib cage and the weight toward one side as far as you can without shifting your hips or losing a neutral spine.
  4. Return and alternate: Rotate smoothly through center, then turn to the other side. Continue alternating sides for the planned repetitions.
  5. Finish safely: Reduce the range or stop if you feel sharp pain or loss of control, then place the weight down carefully before leaving the bench.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Start with a light plate; a heavier weight should not pull your shoulders forward or cause your hips to move.
  2. Move from the rib cage: Let the torso rotate as one controlled unit instead of twisting aggressively through the lower back.
  3. Control breathing: Exhale during each rotation and keep the abdominal wall gently braced throughout the set.
