Ab Wheel Rollout

The ab wheel rollout is a kneeling core exercise in which you roll an ab wheel forward and pull it back while keeping the torso braced. It primarily trains the abdominals, especially their ability to resist spinal extension, with assistance from the shoulders, lats, and hip flexors. It supports core strength, trunk control, and stability for other strength movements.

Instructions

  1. Set up on a clear, non-slip surface. Kneel with the ab wheel directly below your shoulders and hold both handles with a neutral, secure grip.
  2. Brace before moving. Tighten your abdominals and glutes, tuck the pelvis slightly, and keep your head, spine, and hips in one long line.
  3. Roll forward slowly. Move the wheel away from your knees under control while keeping the arms mostly straight and the ribs from flaring.
  4. Use only a controlled range. Stop before your lower back arches or your hips sag; beginners should use a short rollout distance.
  5. Pull back with your core. Exhale, press the hands into the handles, and use the abdominals to draw the wheel back under the shoulders without shifting the hips backward first.
  6. Reset and repeat. Pause briefly in the starting position, re-brace, and end the set if you cannot maintain a neutral spine.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize spinal position over distance. A shorter rollout with the ribs down and hips aligned is more useful than reaching farther with an arched lower back.
  2. Keep the glutes engaged. This helps prevent the hips from sagging and maintains a strong trunk position.
  3. Progress gradually. Begin with small ranges of motion and add distance only when every repetition remains smooth and controlled.
  4. Do not pull with the arms alone. Think of the arms as guiding the wheel while the abdominals control both directions.
