Barbell Abdominal Rollout Kneeling

The kneeling barbell abdominal rollout is an anti-extension core exercise performed by rolling a barbell forward and pulling it back while kneeling. It primarily trains the abdominals, with meaningful assistance from the shoulders, lats, and triceps. It helps develop core strength, trunk control, and stability for lifting and athletic movement.

Instructions

  1. Set up the barbell: Load both ends evenly with round plates that can roll smoothly, and place it on a clear, non-slip floor.
  2. Start kneeling: Kneel behind the barbell with hands shoulder-width apart on the bar. Brace your abdomen, squeeze your glutes, and keep your body in a straight line from knees to head.
  3. Roll forward: Slowly roll the bar forward while keeping the ribs down and hips from sagging. Extend only as far as you can control without arching your lower back.
  4. Return under control: Exhale and pull the bar back toward your knees by tightening your abdominals and lats. Reset your braced position before repeating.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize spinal position: Stop the rollout before your lower back arches or your hips drop.
  2. Use a manageable range: Begin with short rollouts and gradually increase the distance as control improves.
  3. Control every phase: Roll out and return slowly; do not use momentum or let the bar roll away.
