Band Sit-Up

The band sit-up is a resistance-band version of the traditional sit-up. It trains the abdominal muscles, especially the rectus abdominis, while the hips assist the movement. It can help build core strength and control when performed with a smooth, controlled range of motion.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Anchor the band securely at a low, fixed point behind you, then sit facing away from the anchor with the band held at your chest or crossed over your upper chest.
  2. Bend your knees, place your feet flat about hip-width apart, and lie back under control. Keep a light, even tension on the band; do not allow it to pull your shoulders abruptly backward.
  3. Brace your abdomen and keep your chin slightly tucked, with your neck relaxed.
  4. Exhale as you curl your torso up, bringing your rib cage toward your pelvis and sitting up against the band's resistance. Keep the movement controlled rather than jerking with the arms.
  5. Pause briefly at the top without rounding excessively or pulling on your neck.
  6. Inhale and slowly lower your torso until your upper back returns to the floor, maintaining control of the band. Repeat for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Choose manageable resistance. Use a band that lets you rise and return without momentum or loss of posture.
  2. Keep the band at the chest. Do not pull the band with your hands or use it to jerk the torso upward.
  3. Control the descent. Lower slowly; avoid dropping back to the floor or allowing the band to snap you backward.
  4. Protect the neck. Keep space between your chin and chest and stop if the movement causes sharp discomfort.
