Machine Abdominal Crunch

The machine abdominal crunch is a seated resistance exercise that flexes the torso against a guided load. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis, with the obliques assisting to stabilize the trunk. It supports abdominal strength and controlled trunk-flexion training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the seat, back pad, and pads or handles allow a stable seated position with your feet firmly supported.
  2. Select a manageable load and sit tall with your lower back supported; brace your abdomen lightly before moving.
  3. Exhale as you curl your rib cage toward your pelvis, using the abdominal muscles to move the machine through a comfortable range.
  4. Pause briefly in the contracted position without pulling aggressively with the arms, neck, or hips.
  5. Inhale and return slowly until the abdomen is lengthened while keeping control and avoiding a hard slam of the weight stack.
  6. Keep the movement smooth and stop if you feel sharp pain or cannot maintain a stable seated position.

Technique tips

  1. Initiate with your abs by thinking of bringing the ribs down, rather than simply pushing the pads with your arms.
  2. Use a controlled tempo; the return phase is as important as the curl, so do not let the stack pull you back.
  3. Keep your pelvis and feet stable instead of rocking to create momentum.
  4. Use a load that permits a comfortable range of motion without rounding or straining the lower back excessively.
