Machine Crunch

The machine crunch is a resistance exercise performed on an abdominal crunch machine. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis while the obliques assist with trunk control. It supports building abdominal strength and controlled spinal flexion with an adjustable load.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the seat, pad, and handles allow you to sit upright with your feet stable and the pads resting comfortably against your upper body.
  2. Select a light load first, then sit down, brace your feet, and hold the handles or grips as designed by the machine.
  3. Set your torso with your chest lifted, neck neutral, and lower back supported where the machine provides support.
  4. Exhale and curl your torso forward by contracting your abdominals; move smoothly rather than pulling forcefully with your arms.
  5. Pause briefly in the shortened position without rounding excessively or forcing your chin toward your chest.
  6. Inhale and return slowly until your torso is controlled at the start position, then repeat without letting the weight stack slam.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. If you cannot curl your torso without jerking or using your arms, reduce the weight.
  2. Keep your neck relaxed. Look forward or slightly down rather than leading the movement with your head.
  3. Control both phases. A slow return keeps tension on the abdominals and avoids impact from the weight stack.
  4. Use a comfortable range. Stop if the machine setup causes pinching or discomfort in your back, hips, or shoulders.
