Bench Weighted Decline Crunch

The weighted decline bench crunch is an abdominal flexion exercise performed on a decline bench while holding external weight close to the chest. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis, with the decline position increasing the challenge through the range of motion. It supports abdominal strength and controlled trunk flexion.

Instructions

  1. Set up the bench: Set the decline bench securely and anchor your feet under the pads.
  2. Choose the load: Hold a weight plate securely against your chest with both hands; begin with a light load.
  3. Start position: Lie back with your knees bent, keep your lower back in comfortable contact with the bench, and brace your abdomen.
  4. Crunch up: Exhale and curl your upper torso toward your thighs, lifting the shoulder blades from the bench without pulling on the neck.
  5. Return with control: Inhale as you slowly lower until your shoulder blades approach the bench, keeping the weight stable and avoiding a forceful drop.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the movement small: Think about bringing the rib cage toward the pelvis rather than sitting fully upright.
  2. Keep the load close: Holding the plate against the chest reduces unnecessary strain on the arms and shoulders.
  3. Avoid momentum: Use a slow lowering phase; reduce the load or range if you cannot stay controlled.
