Weighted Plank

The weighted plank is an isometric core exercise performed in a forearm plank position with a weight plate placed securely across the upper back. It primarily trains the abdominal muscles while the shoulders and glutes help maintain a rigid body line. It supports core strength, trunk stability, and controlled bracing under load.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Place a light weight plate securely across your upper back; have a training partner position it if needed.
  2. Set your forearms on the floor with elbows directly below your shoulders, and extend your legs behind you with your toes on the floor.
  3. Brace your abdomen and squeeze your glutes to create a straight line from head to heels. Keep your neck neutral and look slightly ahead of your hands.
  4. Hold the position while breathing steadily, without allowing your hips to sag, rise, or rotate. End the hold before your form changes.
  5. To finish, lower your knees to the floor first, then remove the plate carefully. Do not attempt to shift or catch a sliding plate while holding the plank.

Technique tips

  1. Start light: add load only when you can hold an unweighted forearm plank with a stable trunk.
  2. Keep the plate high: position it across the upper back, not on the lower back, and stop if it feels unstable.
  3. Brace and breathe: maintain abdominal tension while taking calm breaths; do not hold your breath throughout the hold.
